Short info: DMV-Stainless - Joint venture of the company Dalmine (Italy), Mannesmann (Germany) and Vallourec (France) is one of the leading manufacturers of high-grade steel pipes in the world. At the production location in Remscheid, DMV utilizes induction furnaces for the pre-heating of the high-grade steel blocks. These induction furnaces which are controlled by thyristor achievement plates and no more by conventional contactors. The following contribution shall show the advantages of the new solution.

Expert contribution: Switching unit concept for multiple-zone inductive billet heating furnaces

by Dipl.-Ing. Stefan Beer
originally published in: ALUMINIUM . 79 (2003) 6

Short info: To ensure precise temperature control even with billets of different lengths and alloys, induction furnaces with axially arranged part-windings are preferable to gas fired furnaces because of the way they work. Heat is generated directly in the body of the charge, so an induction furnace can produce a very high power density there.

Optimum billet heating for extrusion operations

by Dipl.-Ing. Stefan Beer
originally published in: ALUMINIUM . 80 (2004) 5

Short info: The correct billet temperature is of central importance for economical and high-quality extrusion operations. The heating process problem nowadays as a rule has two aspects: heating the billet to extrusion temperature, and producing in it an axial temperature profile (taper) which compensates the heat generated during deformation so that isothermal extrusion takes place. How these objectives can best be achieved – depending on the situation in the extrusion plant – is discussed below with reference to actual examples installed by I.A.S.
